Colin McRae and the Subaru season we still talk about

Chester, November 1995

Colin McRae and Derek Ringer won the RAC Rally and the 1995 World Rally Championship drivers’ and co-drivers’ titles. Carlos Sainz and Richard Burns followed them home in a Subaru 1-2-3. McRae became Britain’s first World Rally Champion, while Subaru claimed its first manufacturers’ crown.

These are period photographs from Subaru Tecnica International’s 1995 RAC archive. They show McRae and Ringer’s number 4 Impreza, registration L555 BAT, rather than a later replica. View the original STI photo archive.

Why it still matters here

For many of us, the connection starts with that shape, those colors and footage of an Impreza on a rally stage. Following the history gives the road cars another layer of meaning, whether yours is a carefully kept daily or a project on stands.

Subaru added manufacturers’ titles in 1996 and 1997. Continue through Rally Heritage for the bigger story, or read the WRC’s Impreza retrospective below. This article looks back at 1995; it is not a new-event report.
